DATING IN THE 50S VS NOW

When I was first hired as a teacher, I was young and single. My grandmother was full of hope that I would meet a fellow teacher at work, fall in love and get married. This idea is not well-advised. I quickly learned why this was a mistake. Teachers do not have the luxury of making 7pm dinner reservations with someone for a first date.

Dating during the week is a struggle. Reserve the week time for dinners at home, take out and Netflix. I met my husband online, on a dating website which I paid for. I had extreme anxiety about using the internet for dating, especially as a high school teacher. This could have ended terribly for me, but what choice did I have? No one was introducing me to people and I did not hang out at bars, because…you know, early bedtime.

My advice is to pay for a membership; this way you know you are meeting adults who, at the very least have a credit card and are old enough to gain access to the site. None, I would suspect. A male co-worker of mine has been approached by students to go on dates with their older siblings, or even one of their parents, on more than one occasion. He has had to field advances at back to school night more than once. I have a friend who teachers at an elementary school where a father scheduled a conference just to ask her out for dinner.

This does happen; it is uncomfortable. Happy hour is not the same time as it is for other professionals. This may sound silly as a dating issue, but hear me out. Teachers typically leave work between 3 and 4 if they are joining coworkers for a drink or two. By the time happy hour is really starting to gear up, you, my teacher friend, are winding down. If your goal is to meet some eligible singles, consider hanging late at work: catch up on stuff before rushing out the door.

This way you still get the good drink deals and more socialization options. Further, this Arbitration Agreement does not preclude you from bringing issues to the attention of federal, state, or local agencies, and such agencies can, if the law allows, seek relief against us on your behalf. You agree that, by entering into this Terms of Service, you and Bored Teachers are each waiving the right to a trial by jury or to participate in a class action.

Your rights will be determined by a neutral arbitrator, not a judge or jury. The Federal Arbitration Act governs the interpretation and enforcement of this Arbitration Agreement. The Notice to Bored Teachers should be sent to U. The Notice must i describe the nature and basis of the claim or dispute and ii set forth the specific relief sought. If Bored Teachers and you do not resolve the claim within sixty 60 calendar days after the Notice is received, you or Bored Teachers may commence an arbitration proceeding.

During the arbitration, the amount of any settlement offer made by Bored Teachers or you shall not be disclosed to the arbitrator until after the arbitrator determines the amount, if any, to which you or Bored Teachers is entitled.

If there is any inconsistency between any term of the AAA Rules and any term of this Arbitration Agreement, the applicable terms of this Arbitration Agreement will control unless the arbitrator determines that the application of the inconsistent Arbitration Agreement terms would not result in a fundamentally fair arbitration. The arbitrator must also follow the provisions of these Terms of Service as a court would. All issues are for the arbitrator to decide, including, but not limited to, issues relating to the scope, enforceability, and arbitrability of this Arbitration Agreement.

Although arbitration proceedings are usually simpler and more streamlined than trials and other judicial proceedings, the arbitrator can award the same damages and relief on an individual basis that a court can award to an individual under the Terms of Service and applicable law. Decisions by the arbitrator are enforceable in court and may be overturned by a court only for very limited reasons. Unless Bored Teachers and you agree otherwise, any arbitration hearings will take place in a reasonably convenient location for both parties with due consideration of their ability to travel and other pertinent circumstances.

If the parties are unable to agree on a location, the determination shall be made by AAA. Regardless of the manner in which the arbitration is conducted, the arbitrator shall issue a reasoned written decision sufficient to explain the essential findings and conclusions on which the award is based. In addition, if you demonstrate to the arbitrator that the costs of arbitration will be prohibitive as compared to the costs of litigation, Bored Teachers will pay as much of the Arbitration Fees as the arbitrator deems necessary to prevent the arbitration from being cost-prohibitive.

All aspects of the arbitration proceeding, and any ruling, decision, or award by the arbitrator, will be strictly confidential for the benefit of all parties. If a court or the arbitrator decides that any term or provision of this Arbitration Agreement other than the above is invalid or unenforceable, the parties agree to replace such term or provision with a term or provision that is valid and enforceable and that comes closest to expressing the intention of the invalid or unenforceable term or provision, and this Arbitration Agreement shall be enforceable as so modified.

If a court or the arbitrator decides that any of the provisions of the section above is invalid or unenforceable, then the entirety of this Arbitration Agreement shall be null and void. The remainder of the Terms of Service will continue to apply. Notwithstanding any provision in this Terms of Service to the contrary, Bored Teachers agrees that if it makes any future change to this Arbitration Agreement other than a change to the Notice Address while you are a user of the Services, you may reject any such change by sending Bored Teachers written notice within thirty 30 calendar days of the change to the Notice Address provided above.

By rejecting any future change, you are agreeing that you will arbitrate any dispute between us in accordance with the language of this Arbitration Agreement. Except for instances in which you have entered into a separate subscription agreement with Bored Teachers, these Terms of Service constitute the entire agreement between you and Bored Teachers and govern your use of the Service, superseding any prior agreements between you and Bored Teachers with respect to the Service.

You also may be subject to additional terms and conditions that may apply when you use affiliate or third-party services, third-party content, or third-party software. These Terms of Service will be governed by the laws of the State of Florida without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

With respect to any disputes or claims not subject to arbitration, as set forth above, you and Bored Teachers agree to submit to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located within Indian River County, Florida. You agree that regardless of any statute or law to the contrary, any claim or cause of action arising out of or related to use of the Service or these Terms of Service must be filed within one 1 year after such claim or cause of action arose or be forever barred. What I mean here is that many professionals leave work at work. Teachers do not have this luxury. Planning and grading will have to come home. The need to devote this amount of your free time to work is likely to be a foreign concept to someone you are dating. This can be particularly inconvenient when your new boo wants to go to brunch and you have to take a raincheck for grading. Make it clear in the beginning what your teacher process is like, and how much time you need to fulfill your professional responsibilities.

If you like grading on Sunday nights, be upfront, make it a hard limit and plan accordingly. You may not want to date where you work When I was first hired as a teacher, I was young and single. Your early bedtime still matters Teachers do not have the luxury of making 7pm dinner reservations with someone for a first date. Learn to like it, get involved it will just be easier on everyone.

Holidays — The holidays teachers do get only correspond with other teachers and their students. Anyone with a normal job is still working, if you are dating a teacher you have no choice on when you would like to go on holiday. Being the school holidays there will also be kids everywhere, get over it! Holidays — there will definitely be at least one argument about working , countless holidays in which we do nothing — cue rant….

Sundays are not lazy days — they are planning afternoons. The only available time will be peak time so guess what people, double the price and double the crowds…midweek skiing is out of the question. Planning for time off during term time is a lot more effort than simply going to work when you teach. Going out in public is the hardest thing and will probably be avoided whenever possible. If you still choose to date a teacher despite my warnings it must be love then all the best to you.

Enjoy your early nights, your expensive holidays and all 3 movies in the hunger games trilogy. Contribution from Alexandra Drabczynska. For more in our blog series click here!

Thank you very much for listening and downloading. Um… Basically saying that they love the podcast and some people are using it just to learn English when they are, for example, driving to work, or travelling on the bus, or on the underground, and some people are teachers who are using the podcasts in their English lessons.

Um, you can, of course, find this podcast on iTunes. And also, you can leave a short review of the podcast on that page. So, please leave a review saying how brilliant the podcast is, okay? Just write a comment, leave a message. So the more messages you send me, the better. And, when I talk about that, I am going to be telling you as well about the present perfect continuous tense and how useful that can be when you are talking about recent news, okay? So, the first part would be little bit about my recent news and the present perfect continuous tense.

Then, in the feature section, you are going to listen to a small comedy sketch about a date, okay? Right, so what have I been up to recently? What have I been doing? Maybe since the last time you met. So, a common conversation might be something like:. B: Fine. B: Well, nothing. But sometimes, you know, you can talk about the things that you have been doing.

And when we talk about recent news like that, we often use the present perfect continuous tense or sometimes the present perfect tense. Some of the language is a little bit complicated. Regents Park is one of the many parks in London. And every Wednesday, I play football in Regents Park. London is so much better when the weather is good.

So, waiting for something that is good. Something that is good is going to happen. I prefer Star Wars actually. But all the critiques say that the new Star Trek film is very very good. I might see it later today actually. It should be a very good science friction movie, very entertaining. Now, I love music, right?

And probably my favourite genre of music is funk or jazz funk. And it also got some jazz in it. And the musicians are excellent. I think you get the idea. But I love it. I love that kind of music. Anyway, what else have I been doing recently? So, I went on a[n] online dating service. Now, you might think: Ugh, online dating? In London lot and lot of people sign up to online dating services. A lot of my friends are on various online dating services. Lot of people do it here in London.

So, I signed up for one called Guardian Soulmates, which is run by the Guardian newspaper here. You will just have to use your imagination to try and guess how those dates went and what the girl was like and all those things. So, there you go. Just before we move onto the feature section, let me just summarise the little bit of grammar that I told you about there. So, we use present perfect continuous to talk about things that like activities that we have done recently.

And, so, you should start using present perfect continuous like that. When you have conversations with your friends. Pretty good. What have you been doing recently? It sounds fantastic. Well, it is fantastic actually. Here we go. Okay, so, the feature section today is about dating. Um… Right, going out with people. Trying to find someone so that you can have a relationship with them. Now, in England, people meet their girlfriend of boyfriend in lots of different ways.

Um, so, how do people meet each other? Well, it might be that their friends hook them up, right? If your friends hook you up with someone, it means that they know you and they know you are single, they also know someone else. So, it might be they know you but they also know a girl, or a boy that they think will like you.

And, so, they arrange for you to meet. So they hook you up, right? Um… And it could be a blind date, for example. They might hook you up on a blind date. It can be a bit difficult and you have to try to make conversation. But a lot of people meet like that. How else? Some people meet at work. You know, I think actually most people in relationships meet their boyfriend or girlfriend at work.

So, they might, for example, meet at work and flirt with each other and chat each other up at work, and then go out with each other. It might be the guy if he fancies a girl at work. They might flirt with each other and then he might ask her out. And then they go on a date and then you know, who knows, they might fall in love or something. Also you can send me an email of course if you got any questions. So they might meet at work. People tend to go out on a Friday or Saturday night, they dress up in their best cloths, they put some perfume or aftershave on and they go out and they drink usually so they get a little bit drunk, which makes it easier to meet someone I think.

And they go out and they dance with people and they chat each other up. And then eventually maybe get a telephone number form them and then arrange to meet up on a date in the future. So a lot of people meet each other when they are drinking in a pub or in a club or something. Some people, especially these days, meet each other on the Internet. And then you can find someone very quickly and very easily.

But the problem is that there are so many people on the Internet that you have to kind of go through a lot of people before you find someone who is right for you. As well as that, a lot of people meet on holiday. And so lots of people have meet[met] their boyfriend or girlfriend on a romantic holiday or something. And these days some people go speed dating. Now, speed dating is a kind of very quick way to meet lots of people in one night. What happens in speed date is you go to a bar and first of all you have to sign up, so you apply to do it over the telephone.

And then you go to a bar, and there might be about 10 or 15 tables in the bar and all the girls sit at the tables. And all the boys have… Well, you have 3 minutes, basically, to try and chat each other up. And after 3-minute, someone rings a bell — ding, ding ,ding — and then you have to move, all the boys move onto the next table.
